I am a member of team - Band of Steel, which is a FIRST LEGO League Robotics Team, with a group of 10 middle school students from 5 different school districts( Sewickley Academy, Seneca Valley, Fox Chapel, North Allegheny and Winchester Thurston). Band of Steel competes in the First Lego League, which is an international STEM program that focuses on designing and coding robots to tackle various challenges, a research project, and the demonstration of core values. The theme for this season is "Submerged", which is all about the oceans and supporting ocean health.
As part of our research project this season, the Band of Steel decided that the problem we wanted to address was a lack of education about why healthy oceans matter to everyone. To address this problem, we created educational videos and other supporting materials focusing on the importance of oceans worldwide and how we can all take action to help protect the oceans. So far, we have reached over 5,000 people worldwide (and counting!) with our educational content. To watch the latest video presentation,

The Band of Steel most recently competed in the First Lego League Southwestern Pennsylvania Championships in December 2024. After judging in four categories (robot design, robot performance, the research project, and core values), we placed first in the robot performance category and were also named the Grand Champions of the competition overall out of 61 teams.
